CHANDIGARH, April 24, 2026: Punjab’s healthcare system is undergoing a significant transformation, with the state government’s flagship Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) emerging as a game-changing initiative that is saving lives and reducing financial stress for thousands of families. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the programme is ensuring that access to critical healthcare is no longer dependent on a patient’s financial capacity.

The scheme provides cashless treatment coverage of up to ₹10 lakh at empanelled government and private hospitals, making advanced medical care accessible to a wide section of society. It is particularly impactful in emergency cases, where timely treatment can make the difference between life and death.

Life-Saving Support for Families in Medical Emergencies

A recent case from Hoshiarpur highlights the real impact of the scheme. Sandeep Singh, who suffered an acute ischemic stroke, was admitted to AIIMS Bathinda, where his treatment cost of ₹32,300 was fully covered under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana.

His father, Jagjeet Singh, shared that having a Sehat Card proved crucial during the emergency, as it ensured immediate treatment without worrying about expenses. Cases like this reflect how the Punjab Government’s policy is directly shielding families from sudden financial burdens during critical health situations.

So far, more than 40 lakh beneficiaries have been enrolled under the scheme. It covers a wide range of serious medical conditions, including neurological disorders such as stroke, head injuries, seizures, and spinal trauma, ensuring that patients receive timely and quality care.

Cashless Healthcare Model Boosts Timely Treatment and Trust

Healthcare experts across Punjab note that neurological emergencies are on the rise due to factors such as hypertension, diabetes, road accidents, and an ageing population. In such cases, immediate medical intervention is crucial.

Doctors highlight that the cashless model introduced by the government is playing a key role in saving time during emergencies. At Rajindra Hospital, medical professionals have observed that surgeries in critical cases are often initiated immediately, with documentation completed later, ensuring no delay in treatment due to financial constraints.

Similarly, doctors in Ludhiana report a noticeable behavioural shift among patients. According to Dr. Harman Sobti, a senior neurosurgeon, patients are now seeking medical help earlier because financial concerns have been significantly reduced. Early intervention in conditions like stroke—where symptoms such as facial drooping, sudden weakness, or speech difficulty appear—greatly improves recovery outcomes.

Hospital data also indicates a steady increase in cashless neurosurgical admissions, reflecting growing trust in the scheme and its effective implementation on the ground.

Government’s Commitment to Accessible Healthcare

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh reiterated that the government remains firmly committed to ensuring that no patient is denied treatment due to lack of funds. He emphasised that the objective is to provide timely and accessible healthcare services to every citizen.

While experts stress the importance of preventive care and early diagnosis to reduce the long-term burden of diseases, the current policy framework is already making a tangible difference in improving healthcare outcomes.

Towards a Healthier and More Secure Punjab

The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana represents a decisive step towards building an equitable and robust healthcare system in Punjab. By removing financial barriers and ensuring access to quality treatment, the government is laying the foundation for a healthier society.

With continued expansion and growing public trust, the scheme is expected to further strengthen Punjab’s healthcare infrastructure and ensure that every citizen receives timely medical care without financial hardship.
