New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday approved a motion to extend the deadline for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to submit its report on the ‘One Nation, One Election Bill’ until the first day of the last week of the Winter Session in 2025.

The motion, moved by PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the panel, sought more time for the JPC to present its findings on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Both bills were introduced in December 2024 and referred to the joint committee for detailed examination.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced the formation of a three-member panel to investigate allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court. The committee comprises Justice Amit Kumar, Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava, and senior advocate B.B. Acharya.

The motion for impeachment, signed by 146 MPs, follows a Supreme Court ruling on August 7, which upheld the legality of an in-house inquiry recommending Justice Varma’s removal. The inquiry was initiated after burnt currency notes—allegedly unaccounted for—were recovered from his official residence in Delhi following a fire incident when he served as a Delhi High Court judge.
