Amritsar: A shocking daylight robbery left a city-based jeweller seriously injured after a group of armed men attacked him and escaped with gold valued at nearly ₹60 lakh in Amritsar on Friday morning. The incident took place near New Flower School, within the limits of the C Division police station.

The injured businessman has been identified as Mukhtiar Singh, who owns a jewellery shop on Sultanwind Road. Police sources said he was carrying around 425 grams of gold at the time of the attack.

According to preliminary information, Singh had taken the gold from his showroom to his residence a day earlier. On Friday at about 10.30 am, he set out on a motorcycle to deliver the jewellery to a customer. As he approached the area near the school, a black car allegedly rammed into his bike, causing him to lose balance.

Witnesses and family members claimed that several attackers — estimated to be between eight and ten — then chased Singh and assaulted him with sharp weapons, including swords. After overpowering him, the assailants fled the scene with the gold.

Local residents alerted Singh’s family, who rushed him to a government hospital. Doctors said he sustained serious injuries but is currently out of danger.

The victim’s relatives have raised concerns over possible extortion threats. A family member, Saab Singh, alleged that they had received threatening calls over the past few days from individuals claiming to be gangsters, demanding money and warning of dire consequences if their demands were ignored. The family believes the robbery may be connected to those threats.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said the victim’s statement was being recorded and multiple teams had been formed to investigate the case. “We are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the suspects and trace their movements,” he said.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area as the investigation continues, while efforts are underway to track down the attackers and recover the stolen gold.
