New Delhi: Amid mounting tensions and fresh unrest in Iran, the Embassy of India in Tehran has advised Indian nationals to leave the country using all available travel options, including commercial flights.
The advisory, issued on Monday, comes against the backdrop of renewed protests in the capital, Tehran, and growing apprehensions of possible military action involving the United States. Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving situation, which has raised safety concerns for foreign nationals residing in the Gulf nation.
In its communication, the embassy urged Indian citizens currently in Iran — including students, pilgrims, business travellers and tourists — to make arrangements to depart at the earliest. The message follows an earlier advisory released in January, reinforcing the government’s cautious stance as developments unfold.
Recent days have witnessed demonstrations by students at several Iranian universities, marking one of the first major waves of campus-led protests since the government’s crackdown on dissent last month. While the scale and trajectory of the protests remain uncertain, the situation has prompted diplomatic missions to reassess safety measures for their nationals.
As per official estimates shared earlier this year, more than 10,000 Indians, a significant number of them students, are believed to be residing in Iran.
The Indian mission has also asked citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to remain vigilant, steer clear of protest sites and maintain regular contact with embassy officials. Nationals have been advised to keep essential travel and identification documents — including passports and residence papers — readily accessible.
For any emergency assistance or clarification, the embassy has encouraged individuals to reach out directly to its offices.
The latest advisory underscores New Delhi’s effort to prioritise the safety of its citizens abroad as geopolitical uncertainties continue to shape the regional landscape.
