New Delhi: India has issued a sharp response after remarks describing several countries, including India, in derogatory terms were amplified online by Donald Trump, terming them “uninformed” and not reflective of bilateral ties.
The controversy arose after comments made by American radio host Michael Savage during a discussion on a legal debate in the United States were shared on social media by Trump. The remarks, linked to arguments around birthright citizenship, referred to countries such as India in a disparaging manner, prompting concern in diplomatic circles.
Responding to the development, the Ministry of External Affairs stressed that such statements do not align with the nature of India–US relations. Official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the comments were “in poor taste” and lacked factual understanding.
He added that ties between India and the United States are built on shared values and mutual respect, and isolated remarks of this kind do not alter the broader partnership between the two nations.
India also took note of a clarification issued by the US embassy, which attempted to downplay the controversy by stating that Trump holds India in high regard. However, the episode has still drawn attention to how political commentary in domestic debates—especially on sensitive issues like immigration—can have unintended global repercussions.
The remarks were originally made in the context of a discussion on US citizenship laws, where concerns were raised about alleged misuse of birthright provisions. However, the language used in describing foreign nations triggered backlash after gaining wider visibility through Trump’s repost.
