New Delhi— The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds beginning April 6 due to an approaching western disturbance.
According to the advisory, the system will impact the Himalayan region and trigger increased weather activity across the plains. Light rainfall is expected at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana over the next 24 hours, with conditions likely to intensify on April 7. The department has forecast light to moderate rainfall at several locations, followed by scattered showers on April 8.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected, with wind speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph on April 6 and increasing to 40–60 kmph on April 7 and 8. There is also a possibility of hailstorms during this period.
Similar conditions are expected in Chandigarh, where light to moderate rainfall may occur at a few places on April 7 and 8, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
The IMD stated that maximum temperatures are unlikely to change significantly in the next 24 hours. However, a drop of 3–5 degrees Celsius is expected over the following two days before temperatures begin to rise again.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during severe weather. People have been urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and take necessary precautions to protect property and crops.
Farmers, especially those with standing rabi crops like wheat, have been advised to suspend agricultural activities during adverse weather conditions and avoid irrigation or spraying during strong winds or lightning.
The weather department continues to monitor the situation and has urged citizens to stay updated with official forecasts.
