New Delhi: Gitanjali Angmo, wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, has responded to criticism over her recent remarks on Sanatana Dharma, asserting that spirituality should not be equated with organised religion and that no political party can claim exclusive ownership over India’s civilisational ethos.
In a post shared on social media platform X on Sunday, Angmo addressed those criticising her earlier comments, urging them to “stop confusing religion with spirituality.” She argued that while religion often centres on institutions, identity and authority, spirituality is a deeply personal journey focused on self-transformation and the pursuit of truth.
Explaining her viewpoint, Angmo said religion seeks followers, whereas spirituality inspires inner growth reflected through an individual’s thoughts, words and actions. She further maintained that governance rooted in spiritual values promotes compassion, wisdom and restraint, while politics driven by religious divisions can create social discord.
Quoting philosopher and spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo, Angmo described Sanatana Dharma as the foundation of Indian civilisation rather than a concept confined to institutional religion. She said it represents a timeless way of life centred on self-realisation and truth, adding that it should not be viewed through a narrow political lens or monopolised by any particular party.
Angmo also used the opportunity to call for reforms in the media landscape, arguing that meaningful educational reforms should be accompanied by responsible dissemination of information. She suggested that improving the quality of public discourse was equally important in shaping an informed society.
Her latest statement comes a day after she praised India’s Generation Z for their role in recent nationwide protests. In her earlier post, Angmo had said the country’s youth had demonstrated the true spirit of Sanatana Dharma through peaceful resistance, courage and patriotism without resorting to violence or hatred.
She had also remarked that young Indians had shown what it truly means for India to aspire to the ideal of a “Vishwaguru,” while suggesting that political leaders could learn from the values displayed by the younger generation.
The comments have sparked widespread discussion on social media, drawing both support and criticism. While some users backed her distinction between spirituality and religion, others questioned her observations on politics and nationalism.
Angmo’s remarks also come against the backdrop of the ongoing political debate surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy, which has intensified discussions on governance, public accountability and youth participation in democratic movements. As reactions continue to pour in, her statements have added another dimension to the broader conversation on the relationship between spirituality, politics and contemporary public life in India.
