Anandpur Sahib: In a significant moment for the Sikh community, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gurgajj was formally honoured with a ceremonial turban at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, marking his second recognition as Jathedar after months of internal deliberations and reconciliation among Sikh bodies.
Before the ceremony, Giani Gurgajj offered prayers at the Takht Sahib, one of the five temporal seats of Sikh authority. The event, held under the supervision of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), drew religious leaders, Nihang representatives, and devotees from across Punjab.
This marks the second turban-tying ceremony for Giani Gurgajj. His earlier appointment in March during Hola Mohalla had triggered controversy, with several Nihang Dals, Taksals, and Sikh organisations opposing the move, alleging that it deviated from established Panthic traditions. Their dissent led to boycotts and visible discord within sections of the community.
Over the past few months, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has been instrumental in bridging the divide. After continuous dialogue with Nihang Singh groups, traditional institutions, and Sikh organisations, consensus was reached to reaffirm Gurgajj’s appointment, culminating in Saturday’s peaceful and widely attended ceremony.
Addressing the sangat after the ceremony, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gurgajj expressed deep gratitude and called for unity within the Panth. “The Panth is eternal and will remain great. I bow before the Panth countless times,” he said. “Today’s unity at Kesgarh Sahib proves that no challenge—be it internal differences or social issues like religious conversions—can weaken us if we stand together. I am merely a humble sevadar of the Panth.”
Observers note that the successful completion of the ceremony signals a thaw in the tensions that had strained relations between the SGPC and traditional Sikh institutions earlier this year.
Religious scholars and Panthic leaders have described the event as a restorative moment for Sikh unity, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving disputes.
With this formal recognition, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gurgajj is now expected to lead community affairs from Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, focusing on strengthening Panthic harmony and addressing pressing religious and social concerns in Punjab.
