Chandigarh: The Punjab Assembly special session on floods witnessed sharp exchanges on Sunday, with former cabinet minister and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh demanding strict action against two key agencies—the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).
Speaking in the House, Pargat Singh accused the agencies of failing Punjab during the recent disaster, calling it a “betrayal.” He noted that the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister had already filed an FIR against the BBMB and urged Punjab to do the same.
He argued that resolutions alone would not be effective unless backed by firm political action. “If we fail to register a case now, such negligence will repeat in the future. These resolutions should not end up gathering dust in government files,” he said.
Referring to past issues such as the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal dispute, Singh criticised Punjab’s inability to file a case against the BJP-led Haryana government. He also called on the state to introduce a Dam Safety Act to strengthen flood preparedness and accountability, assuring his support for united action on the matter.
