Chandigarh: The counting of votes for Haryana’s urban local body elections commenced on Wednesday morning under strict security arrangements across multiple districts, with officials closely monitoring the process in Panchkula, Ambala, Sonepat and other civic bodies.

Election authorities began counting at 8 am amid heavy police deployment at designated centres to ensure peaceful proceedings. The polls cover municipal corporation seats in key urban centres along with municipal council and committee elections in several towns.

According to official figures, over 4.75 lakh voters exercised their franchise out of more than 8.73 lakh eligible voters during the recently concluded elections, reflecting strong public participation.

The results are expected to determine control of municipal corporations in Ambala, Panchkula and Sonepat, while outcomes are also awaited for municipal council polls in Rewari and committee elections in Dharuhera, Sampla and Uklana.

Authorities have enforced extensive security measures around counting centres, with restricted access and surveillance arrangements in place. In Panchkula, traffic movement on the route between Valmiki Chowk and the Sector 14 Industrial Area cut was suspended from early morning to evening to facilitate secure transport and counting operations.

Traffic police issued a public advisory urging commuters to use alternate routes and avoid unnecessary travel near restricted zones throughout the counting period.

Political parties and candidates have stationed their representatives at counting centres to closely track the process as early trends begin to emerge.

The civic elections are being viewed as politically significant, as they are expected to provide a strong indication of voter sentiment ahead of future state-level electoral contests in Haryana.

Officials stated that counting will continue until all rounds are completed and final certified results are announced by the respective returning officers later in the day.
