Amritsar: A debate has emerged over Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi’s recent performance of kirtan during a religious ceremony, drawing strong reactions from Sikh leadership.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, expressed concerns over the performance, stating that Sikh code of conduct specifies that kirtan in the presence of Guru Sahib should be performed only by a devout Sikh. According to Gargaj, the responsibility of performing kirtan lies with those who strictly adhere to the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and lead their lives accordingly.

The Jathedar emphasized that religious traditions must be respected during ceremonies, warning that any deviation from established practices could be considered a violation of Sikh principles.

The video of Jassi’s kirtan quickly circulated online, triggering varied reactions. Supporters praised the singer for promoting Sikh devotional music and cultural heritage, while religious authorities urged strict adherence to tradition, highlighting the significance of preserving the sanctity and dignity of kirtan.

The incident has sparked broader discussion within the community about balancing cultural expression and religious observance, as devotees and scholars weigh in on the matter.
