Kothi (Uttar Pradesh): A woman died in Uttar Pradesh’s Kothi area after the owner of an illegal clinic and his nephew allegedly performed surgery on her by following a YouTube video, police said on Wednesday. The duo had been running the clinic without any valid authorisation, raising serious questions about unchecked quack practices in the region.
According to police, Munishra Rawat, wife of Tehbahadur Rawat, had been suffering from severe abdominal pain related to a stone ailment. On December 5, her husband took her to Shri Damodar Aushdhalaya in Kothi, where clinic operator Gyan Prakash Mishra claimed she needed immediate surgery and estimated the cost at ₹25,000. Before the operation, the family deposited ₹20,000.
In his complaint, Tehbahadur alleged that Mishra, described as a quack, was under the influence of alcohol when he began the procedure after watching a YouTube tutorial. He claimed that Mishra, while intoxicated, made a deep incision that damaged multiple veins, leading to Munishra’s death the next evening on December 6. Mishra’s nephew assisted him throughout the operation.
Kothi SHO Amit Singh Bhadoriya said a case has been registered against both men for causing death by negligence, along with charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Police said both accused are currently absconding, and efforts are underway to arrest them.
Investigators revealed that the nephew, Vivek Kumar Mishra, is employed at an ayurvedic hospital in Raebareli, and the illegal clinic had reportedly been operating for years under the cover of his government job. On Tuesday, the Kothi community health centre superintendent, Sanjeev Kumar, sealed the clinic.
