New Delhi: The Central government on Thursday issued a formal notification announcing the election for the post of Vice President of India, which will be conducted on September 9. The election has been triggered by the resignation of incumbent Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down on July 21 citing health concerns.

As per the notification released today, the last date to file nominations is August 21, and the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by August 25.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the election. He will be assisted by Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Vijay Kumar, Director in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, who will serve as Assistant Returning Officers.

Members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will cast their votes in the Vice Presidential election. With the current composition of Parliament, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds a comfortable majority, giving it a clear edge in the contest.
