Jaunpur: A double murder shocked Jaunpur district on Saturday night when two brothers were gunned down near Ramnagar village while returning home after distributing wedding invitations.

The victims, Shahjahan and his brother Jahangir, were attacked around 11:30 pm near Majhigwan turn on Belwar road. Armed assailants surrounded them and opened indiscriminate fire. Both men fell from their motorcycle after being hit by bullets. Hearing the gunshots, locals rushed to the spot, forcing the attackers to flee.

Family members said the brothers had gone to invite relatives for a wedding scheduled in the family. Shahjahan’s son, Aftab Alam, alleged that police initially informed them about an accident, but when they reached the spot, the brothers were found bleeding heavily from gunshot wounds. He accused the police of misleading the family and delaying action.

The injured men were taken to a community health center and later referred to Prayagraj. Shahjahan died on the way, while Jahangir succumbed to injuries at a private hospital.

Station House Officer KK Singh confirmed that both men were shot multiple times. He said preliminary investigation suggests old enmity, though the motive is not yet fully clear. Shahjahan suffered a bullet above his waist, while Jahangir was hit near the waist and shoulder. Police have registered a murder case against unidentified assailants, and an investigation is underway.
