Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra alleged on Wednesday that Bharatiya Janata Party workers targeted her during a protest in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The incident reportedly transpired outside the residence of party MLA Alifa Ahmed in Palashi, located within the Kaliganj area, where Moitra had arrived to attend an official Trinamool Congress meeting. According to reports, a group of demonstrators assembled outside the venue, chanting “go back” and “chor” slogans while allegedly hurling eggs at the location.
Following the confrontation, Moitra shared a video clip of the incident on her social media platforms, directly accusing BJP workers of orchestrating the hostile demonstration. However, news agency PTI noted that it could not independently verify the authenticity of the shared video footage. Condemning the incident, Moitra claimed that law and order had completely collapsed in the state following the change of government, further alleging that the police administration remained a mute spectator while the BJP actively planned to attack her. She maintained that the agitators were not ordinary citizens but active political workers.
A senior district police officer confirmed that police personnel alongside central security forces reached the spot shortly after the commotion began and successfully dispersed the protesters after a brief dialogue. Notably, this marks the second time in recent weeks that the Trinamool MP has faced such a demonstration. Previously on June 13, members of the BJP Mahila Morcha gathered outside the Krishnanagar district court, where Moitra was scheduled to appear for a legal matter, and similarly attempted to hurl eggs at her. Reacting strictly to the recurring disruptions, Moitra stated that she would pursue legal action against the perpetrators, noting her willingness to approach both the High Court and the Supreme Court if necessary.
