Imphal: Three people, including a woman, were killed and at least seven houses were set ablaze after unidentified armed assailants attacked a village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Friday morning, officials said.
The attack took place around 4 a.m. at Loibol Khullen village in the Saitu-Gamphazol subdivision. According to officials, the violence triggered an exchange of fire between rival groups that lasted for several minutes, forcing villagers to flee their homes and seek safety in nearby forest areas.
The deceased were identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip and Jangminlal Haokip.
Authorities said several houses were destroyed in the fire that broke out during the assault. Security agencies have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the attack.
Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic and unacceptable act of violence. She expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured that the government was treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
“The killing of innocent people and the destruction of homes by armed miscreants cannot be tolerated. Necessary steps are being taken, and those responsible will be brought to justice,” Kipgen said in a statement.
She also appealed to residents to remain calm and not be influenced by forces attempting to create fear and division in the region.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body representing Kuki tribes in the state, also condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation. The organisation described the killings and destruction of property as a grave violation of human rights and demanded swift action against the perpetrators.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of Manipur, where sporadic violence continues to raise concerns over public safety and communal harmony.
