Mughalsarai: A high-speed SUV ran over three pedestrians at Padav Chowk in the Mughalsarai police station area late Thursday night, killing one person on the spot and injuring two others, police said on Friday.

The accident occurred around 11 pm, triggering panic and anger among local residents. Before police personnel could reach the scene, an agitated crowd vandalised the vehicle. The situation was later brought under control by the police, officials said.

Mughalsarai Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Singh identified the deceased as Irshad, 25, a resident of Chaurahat. The two injured pedestrians, both natives of Varanasi, sustained serious injuries and were referred to a hospital in their hometown for further treatment.

Police said the SUV involved in the incident was bearing a West Bengal registration number. The vehicle has been seized, and the driver, identified as Harish Yadav, a resident of Varanasi, has been taken into custody for questioning.

Further investigation into the incident is underway, police added.
