New Delhi: Environmentalist and social activist Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after nearly three weeks of fasting, with doctors saying he requires continuous medical supervision due to weakness and dehydration.

According to a statement issued by the hospital, Wangchuk was brought in for essential medical care after his health deteriorated during the prolonged hunger strike. While his condition is reported to be stable at present, doctors have advised close monitoring to ensure his recovery.

Hospital authorities stated that the activist has become physically weak because of the extended fast and dehydration. Medical teams are currently assessing his condition and providing treatment aimed at restoring vital body parameters.

“Mr. Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted at Safdarjung Hospital for required healthcare. He is weak due to prolonged fasting and dehydration. Although he is currently stable, he requires continuous observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his body parameters,” the hospital said in its official update.

Wangchuk had been observing an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of demands linked to the ongoing protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. His removal from the protest site by Delhi Police on medical advice had sparked protests from supporters, who criticised the action and alleged that the demonstration was being disrupted.

The activist’s health has remained a key concern as the hunger strike entered its third week. Medical experts have repeatedly cautioned that extended fasting can significantly affect multiple organ systems and requires timely intervention.

Hospital officials have not indicated how long Wangchuk is expected to remain under treatment, saying his condition will be reviewed based on his response to medical care. Meanwhile, his supporters continue to gather outside the hospital and have reiterated their commitment to the demands raised during the protest.
