Panchmahal, Gujarat: Six people lost their lives on Saturday after the cable wire of a cargo ropeway snapped at the Pavagadh Hill temple, a prominent pilgrimage site in Panchmahal district, police said.

Superintendent of Police Haresh Dudhat confirmed the fatalities and stated that police and fire brigade teams are on-site conducting rescue and relief operations.

The Pavagadh Hill temple, situated at an elevation of approximately 800 metres, is accessible to pilgrims either by climbing roughly 2,000 steps or via cable cars. Officials noted that the public ropeway had been shut since the morning due to adverse weather conditions.

Pavagadh Hill rises from Champaner in three stages, with its plateau at 1,471 feet above sea level. The hilltop hosts a heavily visited temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, drawing around 2.5 million visitors annually.
