Maredumilli, Andhra Pradesh: Seven Maoists were killed on Wednesday in a fierce exchange of fire with security forces in the Maredumilli region, senior Andhra Pradesh officials confirmed.
At a press briefing, AP Intelligence ADG Mahesh Chandra Laddha said the encounter was part of a prolonged operation that began on Tuesday. He stated that seven Maoists have been reported dead so far, based on inputs received from the field teams.
Among those killed are three women Maoists, Laddha said, adding that the identification process is still underway. One of the deceased has been identified as Meturi Jokha Rao, also known as Shankar.
Shankar, a native of Srikakulam, was reportedly in charge of operations along the Andhra–Odisha border. Preliminary information suggests he was an expert in technical operations, including arms manufacturing and communication systems, making him a key figure within the organisation.
Security forces continue combing operations in the area to ensure no other Maoist elements remain active.
