Security Breach at Red Fort: Seven Delhi Police Officers Suspended Ahead of Independence Day

New Delhi: In a major lapse ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, seven Delhi Police personnel have been suspended for failing to detect a dummy explosive planted during a security drill at the Red Fort, one of the most high-security venues in the country during national events.

According to official sources cited by ANI, the suspended officers include constables and head constables who were tasked with overseeing perimeter security during the drill. The dummy bomb was planted by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell. It was a part of standard preparedness exercise. The team responsible failed to locate it, triggering immediate disciplinary action.

The suspension comes at a critical time when security arrangements are being intensified across the capital in preparation for the Independence Day function, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to give a speech from the Red Fort on August 15.

Routine Drill Uncovers Serious Oversight

Security drills like this are a routine part of the police force’s protocol leading up to national celebrations. However, the inability of on-ground personnel to detect the test device has raised alarms within senior police ranks. Officials say the suspensions are meant to send a clear message about zero tolerance for negligence, especially during high-alert periods.

Separate Incident: Five Bangladeshi Nationals Arrested

In an unrelated development, five Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended while allegedly attempting to illegally enter the Red Fort premises. The individuals, aged between 20 and 25, were reported to be undocumented migrants working as labourers in Delhi.

Police have found documents from the suspects suggesting their Bangladeshi origin. Investigations are currently underway to determine their motive and possible affiliations. Authorities have not ruled out deeper links, and interrogation is ongoing.

Capital Under Tight Security Net

With the Red Fort serving as the focal point of India’s Independence Day celebrations, security across the capital has been tightened significantly. All vehicles entering Delhi from neighboring states are being subjected to intensive checks. Surveillance has been enhanced at key transport hubs and sensitive locations.

Additionally, the Delhi Police have implemented a complete ban on sub-conventional aerial objects, including drones, hot air balloons, and microlight aircraft, from August 2 to August 16. The order was issued by Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
