Saharanpur: A 25-year-old man, identified as Vishal, allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a flyover on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in Saharanpur. The incident, which occurred on April 8 under the jurisdiction of the Badgaon police station, has sparked a high-level investigation after a video recorded by the deceased surfaced on social media. In the purported footage, Vishal claimed he was being relentlessly coerced to marry his widowed sister-in-law, who was nearly ten years his senior, an arrangement he found mentally distressing.
The victim’s mother, Sudesh Devi, filed a formal complaint on Saturday, leading to the registration of a case for abetment of suicide. According to the complaint, the parents of Vishal’s widowed sister-in-law began pressuring him into the marriage following the death of his elder brother, Pritam Singh. Vishal was reportedly staunchly opposed to the union, stating in his final message that he viewed his sister-in-law as a motherly figure and could not accept her as a spouse.
Badgaon Station House Officer Amit Nagar confirmed that the police are currently verifying the authenticity of the social media video. Officials stated that further legal action will be initiated against the individuals named in the complaint once the digital evidence and circumstantial findings are corroborated. The tragic incident has highlighted the severe psychological toll of forced marital arrangements in the region, as authorities continue to record statements from both families involved.
