Delhi: Security agencies across the country have been placed on high alert ahead of Republic Day celebrations following intelligence inputs warning of possible threats from Khalistani and Bangladesh-based extremist groups. The advisory highlights concerns over attempts to target Delhi and other major cities during the national event on January 26.
According to intelligence officials, criminal gangs operating out of Punjab are increasingly being used as operational links by radical handlers based overseas. These handlers are believed to be exploiting existing criminal networks to advance extremist objectives and destabilise internal security. Investigative agencies have noted a growing convergence between organised crime and terror elements, raising fresh challenges for law enforcement.
Inputs suggest that several gang members are active in regions beyond Punjab, including Haryana, the Delhi-NCR belt, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Officials say these groups are gradually forging connections with Khalistani outfits, expanding their operational reach and logistical support across northern India.
In response to the threat assessment, police and security agencies have stepped up preventive measures in the national capital. The North District Police in Delhi have carried out a series of mock drills at locations considered sensitive and densely populated to assess preparedness and coordination among various departments.
During the first half of January, at least four simulation exercises were conducted at key sites in North Delhi. These included vital installations, heritage zones, major commercial centres and transport facilities that witness heavy footfall on a daily basis. Areas such as the Red Fort, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar and several Metro stations were covered during the drills.
Officials said the exercises were aimed at testing response times, communication systems and inter-agency coordination in case of any emergency. Additional deployment, intensified surveillance and stricter checks are expected in the coming days as Republic Day approaches.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel, reiterating that preventive steps are being taken to ensure peaceful and secure celebrations.
