New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha faced swift adjournment within minutes on Thursday amid chaotic scenes as the government and Opposition clashed over the terms of a debate on the alleged National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak. Treasury benches advocated for an immediate discussion on the matter, while Opposition leaders maintained their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan before allowing proceedings to continue.

Addressing the House amidst continuous slogan-shouting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju affirmed that the executive remains fully prepared to engage in a comprehensive debate. He accused Opposition factions of setting preconditions that actively blocked the dialogue, noting that prior discussions with floor leaders had indicated a willingness to proceed. Urging political parties to refrain from politicizing matters concerning student welfare, Rijiju called for the withdrawal of all preconditions to allow the Chair to decide the format of the debate in both Houses of Parliament.

Responding to the government, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge stated that earlier public remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had aggravated the situation in the House. Kharge reiterated the Opposition’s unified stand that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must step down from his post to ensure a fair and unbiased discussion.

The parliamentary confrontation followed an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring the establishment of dedicated fast-track courts to ensure the rapid trial and conviction of individuals involved in examination paper leaks. The Prime Minister emphasized that these judicial measures aim to safeguard the future of the nation’s youth and restore public trust in the competitive examination system.
