Prime Minister’s Office to Shift from South Block, First Since Independence

New Delhi — After operating from South Block since 1947, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is set to move to its new premises next month. The new facility, part of the Central Vista redevelopment project, is located in the Executive Enclave near the Prime Minister’s residence.

The shift comes amid concerns over limited space and outdated infrastructure in the colonial-era buildings. The Executive Enclave will house the PMO, the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, and a modern conferencing facility.

The North and South Blocks, which served as the core of India’s administration for nearly eight decades, will be converted into public museums. These will form part of the ‘Yuge Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya’, a cultural heritage project being developed in collaboration with the French Museum Development authority.

Reports also indicate that the new Prime Minister’s Office may receive a fresh name reflecting the principle of service, reinforcing the idea that it represents the people rather than being viewed as a seat of personal power.
