New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.

The meeting is expected to cover key bilateral, regional and global developments, with trade and economic cooperation likely to figure prominently in discussions between the two leaders.

Modi will embark on a visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan beginning August 29. He will be in Uzbekistan from August 29 to 30 before travelling to Kyrgyzstan for the SCO Summit, scheduled to be held in Bishkek from August 31 to September 1.

Modi-Putin Meeting To Focus On Bilateral Cooperation

The upcoming meeting follows External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Russia, during which he met Putin.

During their interaction, the Russian President expressed hope that his next meeting with Modi would take place on the sidelines of the SCO Summit and asked Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to the Prime Minister.

The Modi-Putin talks are expected to review the broader India-Russia relationship, including bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Energy and fertiliser supplies could also feature in the discussions, particularly against the backdrop of disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.

During his meeting with Jaishankar, Putin assured India of continued Russian supplies of energy and fertilisers. He also said Moscow was prepared to further increase fertiliser supplies to meet India’s agricultural requirements.

Putin noted that India-Russia bilateral trade had increased in 2026 after recording a slight decline in 2025.

PM Modi To Visit Uzbekistan Before SCO Summit

Before travelling to Bishkek, Modi will visit Uzbekistan, where he is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The discussions will focus on further strengthening the India-Uzbekistan strategic partnership.

The two sides are expected to review cooperation in areas including trade and investment, defence, energy, digital connectivity and education, besides discussing ways to strengthen people-to-people ties.

The visits come as India continues diplomatic engagement with its key partners amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global energy and supply chains.
