Madhepura (Bihar): More than 70 children fell ill after allegedly consuming a mid-day meal at a government-run school in Bihar’s Madhepura district, triggering panic among parents and villagers, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place on Saturday at the Upgraded Middle School located in Karu Tola under the Madhepura Sadar block.

Soon after eating the mid-day meal, several students began complaining of stomach pain, dizziness and vomiting, prompting teachers and locals to rush them for medical help.

All the affected children were taken to Madhepura Sadar Hospital, where doctors admitted them for treatment and observation.

Hospital authorities said that most of the children are now out of danger, though the condition of one girl student remains critical.

Local residents alleged that the food served to the children may have been contaminated, claiming that a lizard was found in the cooked meal.

District Education Officer Sanjay Kumar confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident.

“Strict action will be taken against those found responsible after the inquiry,” the DEO said.

Officials from the education and health departments have collected samples of the food for examination.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the quality and safety of mid-day meals being served in government schools.

Authorities said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
