Varanasi: Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi have issued a notice to folk singer Neha Singh Rathore in connection with a case registered in 2025 over her alleged objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said on Thursday.
Lanka police station in-charge Rajkumar Sharma said the notice was served as part of the procedural steps required while preparing the charge sheet in the case. He confirmed that the case pertains to allegations of derogatory comments made by Rathore against the Prime Minister and that the action was taken strictly in accordance with the law.
Reacting to the notice, Rathore took to social media platform X, claiming that police personnel from the Lanka police station reached her residence after she was earlier summoned by the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow. In her post, she alleged harassment and questioned the priorities of law enforcement agencies, drawing a comparison with what she described as delays in delivering justice in other cases.
Police, however, maintained that the notice was issued as part of routine legal procedure and denied any allegations of harassment.
Separately, Rathore is also facing an investigation by the Lucknow police in another case linked to a social media post she made about the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 tourists were killed. An FIR in that matter was registered on April 27. Rathore subsequently approached the Supreme Court and was granted interim protection from arrest on January 7.
The developments come amid heightened scrutiny of social media content and public statements, with authorities reiterating that due process is being followed in all ongoing investigations.
