Nationwide Electoral Roll Revision Likely to Begin After Bihar Poll Results

New Delhi— The all-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is expected to commence after the Bihar Assembly election results on November 14, sources said. The final schedule will be determined following the Supreme Court hearing on the Bihar SIR, slated for November 4.

Officials familiar with the matter said the nationwide revision exercise will likely be conducted in multiple phases, taking into account factors such as school examinations, crop harvesting cycles, and regional weather conditions.

Although the national rollout will start after the Bihar polls, several states have already begun preliminary revisions of their electoral lists. This process began on September 10, when the Election Commission of India (ECI) convened a meeting of all chief electoral officers (CEOs) and instructed them to map current voters against the data from the last SIR conducted in their states.

Meanwhile, the ECI is holding a two-day review session in New Delhi with all state CEOs, which began on October 22. During these deliberations, the CEOs presented updates to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi on the progress made since September.

The presentations included state-wise data on the number of registered electors, qualifying dates, and comparisons with figures from the last completed SIR. The final framework for the upcoming nationwide roll revision is expected to be announced after the Bihar election process concludes.
