New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to begin on Monday with signs of a heated opening, as the Opposition plans to raise several contentious issues while the Centre looks to push forward its legislative agenda.

At the all-party meeting held ahead of the session, Opposition leaders sought discussions on matters including the alleged theft linked to the Ram Temple, examination paper leaks and ethanol blending. The government, on its part, appealed to all political parties to ensure smooth functioning of both Houses and participate in constructive debates on proposed legislation.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged members to focus on meaningful discussions instead of disruptions, saying that legislative business should not be overshadowed by protests. He expressed hope that all parties would cooperate in ensuring productive proceedings during the session.

The meeting witnessed political friction after members of the Trinamool Congress and several Opposition parties staged a symbolic walkout over the participation of rebel TMC MPs. The issue of their recognition and pending disqualification proceedings also surfaced during the discussions.

Another issue expected to dominate the session is the proposed legislation related to delimitation and women’s reservation. Although the Bill is not part of the government’s initial legislative list, Rijiju indicated that additional Bills could be introduced after consultations through the Business Advisory Committees of both Houses.

Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, reiterated their demand for wider consultations before any move on delimitation. Leaders from the DMK maintained that their stand would depend on the contents of any revised proposal, particularly if it affects the representation of southern states.

The government also appealed to political parties to work together on issues of national importance, especially in light of the evolving situation in West Asia. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly called for cooperation across party lines during the meeting.

Despite the Centre’s appeal for consensus, political observers expect sharp exchanges in Parliament as both the government and the Opposition prepare to press their respective priorities during the weeks-long session. With several politically sensitive issues likely to be raised, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense debates from the very first day.
