Thiruvananthapuram: Torrential monsoon rainfall and widespread flooding across Keralam have resulted in at least 26 fatalities and severe infrastructure damage, prompting state authorities to launch extensive emergency relief and rescue operations. Addressing a news conference following a cabinet review meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan confirmed that the state administration has established 462 active relief camps across multiple affected districts to provide emergency shelter, food, and medical assistance to 27,048 displaced residents. The Chief Minister stated that eleven individuals have sustained injuries in rain-related accidents, while search and rescue teams continue operations to trace four people who remain missing amidst heavy inundation and landslides.

The southern and central districts of the state have borne the brunt of the heavy downpours, with Pathanamthitta hosting the highest number of relief camps at 157 facilities, followed closely by Kottayam with 154 camps and Alappuzha with 81 operational centres. District administrations have been instructed to ensure a continuous supply of essential provisions, drinking water, and sanitation facilities to prevent the outbreak of waterborne illnesses. Local municipal bodies and voluntary organisations are actively working alongside state disaster management personnel to coordinate evacuation efforts from low-lying riverside communities and hazardous hilly regions prone to landslips.

In addition to human displacement, the agrarian sector has suffered severe disruption, leaving thousands of farming families facing substantial economic hardship. Official preliminary estimates indicate that inundation has damaged crops across 1,882 hectares of agricultural land, directly impacting 23,537 farmers with financial losses calculated at approximately 67.44 crore rupees. To alleviate the immediate financial distress, Chief Minister Satheesan announced an immediate interim financial assistance of 10,000 rupees for every flood-impacted household, alongside a state-approved compensation package of 6 lakh rupees for families whose homes were completely destroyed in the deluge. The government has also sanctioned enhanced financial assistance packages for the next of kin of those who lost their lives.

Highlighting long-term structural challenges, Chief Minister Satheesan observed that major rivers across Keralam have lost a significant portion of their natural carrying capacity due to prolonged silt accumulation, promising urgent administrative measures to undertake extensive riverbed de-siltation. The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising environmental monitoring by establishing advanced weather forecasting systems and fortifying disaster response frameworks in vulnerable districts like Pathanamthitta. State departments remain on high alert as meteorologists monitor regional weather patterns, with local authorities advising residents in high-risk zones to maintain strict vigilance until water levels recede across major river basins.
