New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting marks a pivotal moment in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, as both nations actively seek to expand and deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Prior to the summit meeting, the visiting Japanese Prime Minister was accorded a formal ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which included a traditional guard of honour. Welcoming her on her first official trip to India, Prime Minister Modi introduced Takaichi to his cabinet colleagues and other senior dignitaries. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the reception underscores a future-oriented partnership built on mutual trust and shared democratic values. The Japanese Cabinet Public Relations Office also expressed enthusiasm on social media, reflecting on the warm reception and the immediate commencement of the crucial leadership talks.
Takaichi is currently on a three-day official visit to India, spanning July 1 to 3, following an invitation from Prime Minister Modi. The annual summit serves as a comprehensive review of the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation while providing a platform to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. According to official statements from the Ministry of External Affairs, a primary focus of this year’s discussions involves fortifying collaboration across strategic, economic, technological, and security domains.
Diplomatic channels indicate that the two leaders are focusing heavily on boosting investment and innovation, securing resilient supply chains for critical sectors like semiconductors, and exploring new avenues in critical minerals. The agenda also features discussions on maritime security, defence technology cooperation, and the prospective development of an Industrial Value Chain to connect the Bay of Bengal with India’s Northeast region. Additionally, Takaichi will address the India-Japan Business Forum to engage with industry leaders regarding expanded commercial cooperation. This diplomatic engagement follows Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th joint summit, highlighting a continuous bilateral dialogue aimed at promoting peace, stability, and economic safety in the Indo-Pacific.
