New Delhi: A 30-year-old Assistant Section Officer serving in the Ministry of Defence was discovered dead at her rented residence in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka on Friday, triggering a police inquiry into allegations of domestic harassment. The victim, identified as Nazia Khanam, had married Mohammad Azam Ali Khan in April of this year. Her family alleged that she was three months pregnant at the time of her death.
Emergency response personnel arrived at the scene in Bharthal village after receiving a distress call on Friday afternoon. The body was secured and transferred to the mortuary at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate was notified to oversee administrative proceedings. According to statements given by the husband to investigators, the couple had engaged in an argument earlier that day, after which the victim reportedly locked herself in an adjoining room.
While the victim’s relatives did not initially raise allegations during their primary magistrate deposition, her parents subsequently filed a formal complaint on Saturday with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, accusing her husband and in-laws of persistent mental and physical cruelty. Following the complaint, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report at the Sector 23 police station under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering cruelty by a spouse or relative and abetment of suicide. Officials confirmed that further legal measures will depend on forensic findings and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
