Virudhunagar: A devastating explosion ripped through a firecracker manufacturing unit in the Kattanarpatti area near Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, April 19, 2026. According to the Fire and Rescue Department, at least 16 workers have been confirmed dead, while six others sustained severe injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a local government hospital. The blast was so powerful that it caused significant structural damage to surrounding buildings and led to the collapse of portions of the factory, leaving several individuals feared trapped under the debris.

Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 30 workers were present at the facility when the explosion occurred during routine manufacturing processes. Rescue teams, including local police and fire personnel, are currently engaged in a massive operation to clear the rubble and locate any survivors. While the exact cause of the blast remains under investigation, early suspicions point toward friction or chemical instability during the mixing process, a recurring issue in the region’s fireworks industry.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and immediately dispatched ministers K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to the site to oversee the relief efforts. The Chief Minister has instructed the District Collector to ensure all necessary medical assistance is provided to the injured and has initiated a high-level probe into the safety standards maintained at the unit. This tragedy comes just a week after another significant explosion at a fireworks factory near Sattur on April 13, highlighting an alarming trend in industrial accidents within the district.
