Kishtwar: A devastating cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district has triggered flash floods, claiming at least 33 lives and leaving several others missing. The incident occurred early Thursday in the Chashoti area, the starting point of the Machail Mata Yatra, catching both locals and pilgrims off guard.

According to officials, the sudden deluge swept away a langar (community kitchen) set up for devotees along the pilgrimage route to the revered Himalayan shrine of Mata Chandi. Rescue teams fear the toll may rise as search operations continue in the flood-affected zone.

Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been dispatched, while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and army personnel are also on site. Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Sharma confirmed that relief efforts were launched immediately despite challenging weather conditions.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued an advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across the region in the coming hours, with the possibility of intense showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, who spoke directly with DC Pankaj Sharma after being alerted by local MLA and Leader of the Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma, described the cloudburst as “a massive and unforeseen tragedy.” He assured that all necessary arrangements for rescue, medical treatment, and even heli-rescue operations were being coordinated.

“Every possible form of assistance will be extended. The situation is being monitored closely, and our office is receiving constant updates from ground zero,” the minister said.

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor of J&K expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, extending condolences to the bereaved families. It also confirmed that rescue operations are being expedited with the combined efforts of the NDRF, SDRF, civil administration, police, and army units.

Authorities have urged pilgrims and locals to remain vigilant and avoid risky travel until weather conditions improve.
