Srinagar: A major tragedy was averted in Jammu and Kashmir after security forces detected and neutralised a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) along the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway on Wednesday.
According to reports, the suspicious object was spotted by security personnel during a routine patrol along the highway. Suspecting a potential threat, forces immediately cordoned off the area and halted traffic movement on both sides of the road, leading to long queues of vehicles.
The discovery triggered panic in the area, as initial assessments suggested the device could have been part of a larger terror plot.
Upon receiving information, a bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot. Following standard safety protocols, the team examined the suspicious package and initiated the process to safely defuse it. Security personnel maintained strict vigil throughout the operation to prevent any untoward incident.
Following the incident, a high alert has been issued across the region. Joint teams of the army and police have intensified search operations in nearby villages and residential areas. Drones and sniffer dogs are being deployed to thoroughly scan the area and ensure no additional explosives have been planted.
Authorities said the situation is under control, and investigations are underway to identify those behind the attempted attack.
