New Delhi: Residents and commuters in Delhi’s Mahipalpur locality were briefly alarmed on Thursday morning after a powerful sound resembling a blast echoed near the Radisson Hotel. The noise, which triggered panic among passersby, was later traced to the bursting of a DTC bus tyre, police confirmed.
According to police sources, an emergency call reporting a suspected explosion near the busy Mahipalpur junction was received around mid-morning. Responding swiftly, multiple teams from the South-West district police rushed to the location to investigate.
“The caller, who was en route to Gurugram, reported hearing a loud bang near the Radisson area,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Amit Goel. “Our teams thoroughly inspected the stretch but found no evidence of any blast or damage.”
Further inquiry revealed that the sound originated from a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus whose rear tyre had burst while it was heading towards Dhaula Kuan. A local security guard in the vicinity helped confirm the sequence of events.
DCP Goel urged residents not to panic, assuring them that the situation was fully under control. “There is no cause for alarm. It was simply a tyre burst, not an explosion,” he clarified.
The incident, however, created temporary chaos in the area, as several commuters and hotel staff mistook the sharp noise for an explosion, prompting distress calls to the police control room.
This brief scare comes at a time when security measures across Delhi have been intensified following the November 10 Red Fort car blast, which killed 12 people and left several others injured. In light of recent events, even minor disturbances have drawn quick responses from authorities.
By late morning, normalcy had been restored in Mahipalpur, with traffic and local movement resuming as usual. Police reiterated their appeal to citizens to verify information before circulating rumours and to remain calm during such situations.
