New Delhi: The Lok Sabha witnessed intense parliamentary confrontations on Wednesday as Opposition parties clashed with the ruling government over alleged police brutality during the Cockroach Janta Party protest in the national capital. Dressed in black attire to observe a “Black Day,” Opposition lawmakers protested against the security forces’ response to student demonstrators and Parliament members on July 20. The Lower House faced immediate disruptions when proceedings commenced at 11 am, leading to a brief adjournment. Upon reconvening at noon, the chamber erupted into heated arguments regarding accountability and parliamentary debate rules.
Leading the initial charge for the Opposition, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal criticized the government’s handling of student grievances. Reaffirming the Opposition’s unified stance, Venugopal demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over examination paper leak issues and requested an adjournment motion to facilitate a formal debate. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju countered by stating that the Centre remains fully willing to debate the paper leak controversy but insisted that any discussion must adhere to standard procedure and formal consultations with party floor leaders.
The debate escalated significantly following an intervention by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who questioned the Chair’s allocation of speaking time. Yadav accused Speaker Om Birla of granting speaking privileges primarily to government representatives and Congress members while ignoring other Opposition voices. Emphasizing that the matter transcended political affiliations, Yadav stated that the core focus should remain on the welfare of students who took to the streets to voice their grievances.
Condemning the police response during the demonstration, the Samajwadi Party leader detailed allegations of severe physical injuries inflicted on young protesters. Yadav asserted that demonstrators suffered broken bones, head injuries, and torn clothing, questioning the treatment of female protesters by law enforcement. He further defended the Opposition’s decision to march toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, stating that the action was necessitated by the Speaker’s refusal to grant a proper hearing inside Parliament. Yadav demanded that Prime Minister Modi address the Lower House directly regarding student concerns.
Amid ongoing sloganeering, Speaker Om Birla maintained that broad consensus existed across party lines to discuss student concerns and urged members to establish a structured schedule alongside the government. Stating that constructive debate could not proceed under continuous disruption, the Speaker adjourned the Lok Sabha until 2 pm.
