Lok Sabha Agenda Packed with Key Bills; Opposition Likely to Target Amit Shah Over Jantar Mantar Protests

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is set for a potentially contentious sitting on Monday, with four major pieces of legislation on the agenda as the government seeks to push ahead with its legislative programme amid continuing Opposition protests.

Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to introduce two of the Bills, while the Tribunal Reforms Bill, 2026 is also expected to come up for consideration. However, the proposed legislative business could face disruption if the deadlock between the government and the Opposition continues.

At the centre of the political confrontation is the alleged police action against students and other demonstrators during a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. Opposition parties have been demanding an explanation from Shah and are expected to raise the matter in the House.

Shah to introduce two Bills

Shah is listed to move the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 and the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for consideration.

The Kerala name-change legislation follows the state Assembly’s unanimous decision on July 1 supporting the proposal to rename the state Keralam. The matter had reached the Assembly after the President sought the legislature’s views on the proposed change.

The Centre is now moving forward with the parliamentary process required to formally change the state’s name.

Tribunal reform proposal on agenda

Another important item before the House is the Tribunal Reforms Bill, which seeks to overhaul the existing framework governing tribunals.

One of the proposed changes is the creation of a National Tribunals Commission, which would be headquartered in Delhi. The proposed body would have five members — a chairperson, two judicial members and two technical members.

The legislation also lays down provisions governing the eligibility, appointment, remuneration, resignation and removal of tribunal chairpersons and members.

Opposition keeps Jantar Mantar issue alive

The legislative agenda comes against the backdrop of continued friction between the Treasury and Opposition benches.

INDIA bloc parties have been seeking clarification over the police response to the July 20 demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Opposition leaders have questioned who authorised the action and have sought an account of the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of force.

The issue has already contributed to repeated disruptions during the monsoon session. Opposition members have staged protests both inside Parliament and outside the complex, demanding that the government respond to their concerns.

Delimitation, FCRA Bills face uncertainty

The proposed delimitation and Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Bills also remain surrounded by uncertainty amid the continuing parliamentary standoff.

The government is keen to continue with its legislative agenda, but repeated disruptions have affected the amount of debate on several measures.

During the current session, the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 was among the few pieces of legislation that saw substantial participation from both sides of the House. Several other Bills, according to the details available, were cleared in a short time amid protests and without detailed debate.

Monday’s proceedings are therefore likely to be closely watched, with the government seeking to advance key legislation and the Opposition preparing to press Amit Shah for answers over the Jantar Mantar episode.
