Thiruvananthapuram: The cyber wing of the Kerala Police has registered a case against the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and one of its account holders for the circulation of an AI-generated video. The video allegedly portrays Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India (ECI) in a “misleading and defamatory manner.” According to an official statement issued on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the content was flagged by several official channels, including the ECI itself, during a period of heightened sensitivity due to the upcoming state assembly elections.
Law enforcement officials stated that upon verification, the material was found to have the potential to “mislead the public, undermine the credibility of constitutional bodies, and adversely impact the conduct of free and fair elections.” The FIR was filed late Wednesday night at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram City. The case specifically names the X handle “Laxmi N Raju (@valiant_Raju)” along with other unnamed associates and X Corp as an intermediary.
The investigation is now focused on ascertaining the origins of the video and determining the legal culpability of the platform and the user under relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This action follows a series of recent warnings by the Kerala Police regarding the misuse of deepfake technology and AI-generated misinformation during the election cycle. Authorities have reiterated that spreading unverified or manipulated content that could incite sectarianism or damage the integrity of the electoral process will face strict legal consequences.
