Kangana Ranaut Withdraws Supreme Court Plea in Defamation Case Linked to Farmers’ Protest Remarks

New Delhi: Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut on Friday withdrew her petition from the Supreme Court that sought to quash a defamation case filed against her over remarks made during the 2020–21 farmers’ protest.

The matter was listed before a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. During the brief hearing, the bench appeared reluctant to entertain the petition, prompting Ranaut’s legal team to withdraw the plea voluntarily.

The case pertains to alleged defamatory comments made by Ranaut on social media in relation to the farmers’ agitation, which had drawn widespread attention and criticism at the time. A complaint was subsequently filed against her, and her earlier attempt to have the case dismissed by the High Court was unsuccessful.

Following the High Court’s refusal to quash the proceedings, Ranaut had approached the Supreme Court seeking relief. However, with the top court showing little inclination to intervene, her counsel opted to withdraw the petition.

Legal experts note that the withdrawal does not impact the ongoing trial at the lower court, where the defamation case will continue as per procedure.

Ranaut, known for her outspoken public statements, has faced multiple legal challenges over her comments on various political and social issues. This case adds to the list of legal troubles the actor-turned-politician is currently navigating.
