New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday met the newly confirmed US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, who is on a six-day visit to New Delhi following his Senate confirmation. The meeting underscored the growing depth of India-US relations amid efforts by both nations to expand cooperation across strategic, economic, and defense sectors.
“Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility,” Jaishankar posted on X after the meeting.
Gor is accompanied by US Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas during the visit, which runs from October 9 to 14, according to the US State Department. He is expected to formally present his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu later this month.
Earlier on Saturday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also met Gor for discussions on shared priorities under the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. “They had a productive exchange… FS wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X.
The visit comes at a crucial time as India and the US work toward finalizing a new trade agreement while boosting collaboration in advanced technology, defense manufacturing, and energy security.
This is not Jaishankar’s first interaction with Gor. The two had previously met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 24, where they discussed deepening bilateral engagement. Following that meeting, the US State Department noted that both sides “look forward to further promoting the success of the US-India relationship.”
In his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor highlighted India’s growing influence in shaping regional and global affairs. “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond. Its geographic position, economic growth, and military capabilities make it a cornerstone of regional stability and a critical part of promoting prosperity and advancing shared security interests,” he told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Gor’s appointment, approved in August by US President Donald Trump, reaffirms Washington’s intent to strengthen ties with New Delhi. His dual role as Ambassador and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs reflects a renewed focus on expanding cooperation with India amid ongoing trade and technology discussions.
