IndiGo Charts Global Expansion as It Marks 20 Years of Operations

NEW DELHI — As IndiGo prepares to celebrate 20 years of operations on August 4, India’s largest airline is laying the groundwork for a major international expansion. According to co-founder and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia, the carrier is gearing up for a “longer leap of flying” aimed at connecting the vast Indian diaspora, winning back international traffic currently routed through Gulf hubs, and eventually facilitating sixth-freedom transit travel across India.

The carrier, which currently commands over 66 per cent of India’s domestic market, plans to execute this next phase through fleet expansion, starting with the induction of Airbus A321 XLR jets followed by long-haul wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft scheduled for delivery from 2028. However, Bhatia noted that while the airline aspires to build a global footprint, its core foundation remains grounded in its robust domestic network.

Addressing current operational strategy, Bhatia emphasized that IndiGo’s long-haul focus will centre on taking Indian travellers abroad and bringing the diaspora home. He noted that Gulf carriers have historically captured significant economic value by funnelling Indian passengers through foreign hubs. To counter this, Bhatia stated that domestic carriers like IndiGo and Air India bear the responsibility of retaining that economic value by using Indian airports as primary transit hubs.

While the airline temporarily adjusted its long-haul operations by discontinuing damp-leased Boeing 787 flights due to regional airspace constraints and geopolitical tensions in West Asia, its long-term strategy targets international capacity growth. IndiGo’s Vision 2030 aims to elevate its international capacity to 40 per cent of total operations, positioning India as a preferred global hub connecting traffic between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
