Umroi: The Indian Army on Wednesday officially commenced its first-ever self-hosted multilateral military training exercise, PRAGATI 2026, at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. Scheduled to run from May 20 to May 31, 2026, the elite two-week engagement unites defense contingents from India and 12 friendly regional nations, strengthening defense diplomacy and establishing unified tactical approaches within the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region.

The name PRAGATI stands for the Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. The partner nations participating in the inaugural drills include Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. Conducted under a core philosophy of equality, mutual learning, and shared security goals, the exercise offers an expansive physical platform for participating forces to exchange real-world operational experiences, standardize tactical command post procedures, and strengthen inter-military camaraderie.

The primary operational focus of the 13-nation joint exercise centers on executing counter-terrorism maneuvers within challenging jungle and semi-mountainous terrains. The rigorous itinerary incorporates specialized joint planning simulations, reflex shooting drills, room intervention tactics, heliborne operations, and casualty evacuation exercises designed to test the endurance, flexibility, and coordination of the troops under high-stress conditions. The joint exercises will ultimately culminate in an intense, continuous 72-hour validation drill to demonstrate the tactical interoperability achieved by the collective contingents.

Beyond field maneuvers, the event functions as a major showcase for India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities under the central Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. A dedicated two-day industry exposition is running parallel to the military drills, featuring cutting-edge hardware designed by Indian tech and defense firms to foster international industrial partnerships, particularly with ASEAN members. The displays cover an array of modern tactical solutions, including unmanned aerial and ground systems, autonomous surveillance robotics, precision ammunition, artificial intelligence-based capability enhancements, multi-spectral camouflage netting, and secure satellite communication networks. Major General Sunil Sheoran, Additional Director General of Infantry, inaugurated the opening assembly, urging the multinational forces to approach the joint wargames with openness and mutual respect to forge a robust, cooperative framework against modern regional security threats.
