India Voices Concern Over Nationals Recruited into Russian Army, Urges Citizens to Exercise Caution

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated its strong opposition to the recruitment of Indian nationals into the Russian armed forces, following recent reports that more individuals have been drawn into military roles amid ongoing global tensions.

In a formal statement addressing media queries, MEA Spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India has expressed its concern multiple times over the past year about the rising trend of such enlistments. According to the ministry, this issue has been raised directly with Russian authorities in both Delhi and Moscow, with calls for the immediate release of Indian citizens who may have been inducted under misleading or coercive circumstances.

“We have seen reports about Indian nationals having been recruited recently into the Russian army,” Jaiswal stated, emphasizing that the Indian government has consistently warned citizens against engaging in such risky ventures. He added that families of the affected individuals have been contacted and are being kept informed.

Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement

Indian officials have reportedly urged their Russian counterparts to put an end to this practice and ensure the safe return of Indian nationals. While details remain limited regarding the exact number of individuals involved, the MEA’s proactive engagement signals a growing concern over the vulnerability of Indian citizens abroad, particularly in conflict-prone regions.

This is not the first time the issue has come to light. Last year, a similar advisory was issued following reports of Indian youths being lured abroad under false pretenses, only to find themselves in precarious or life-threatening situations.

Government Urges Public Vigilance

In a firm cautionary note, the government once again appealed to Indian nationals to avoid any involvement in military recruitment abroad — particularly with the Russian army — calling it a path “fraught with danger.”

The ministry emphasized that any such offers, whether communicated through unofficial agents or misleading advertisements, should be reported and avoided.

Broader Context of Concern

The recruitment of foreign nationals into the Russian military has drawn international attention in recent months, with multiple countries expressing alarm over their citizens’ involvement in foreign armed conflicts. Human rights organizations have also raised red flags about the use of economic vulnerability to attract foreign individuals into military service.

For India, where a large number of youth seek overseas opportunities, the issue highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and regulatory scrutiny around such overseas ventures.
