Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is making comprehensive preparations to host the 2036 Olympic Games, highlighting the country’s growing footprint in organising major international sporting events.
Addressing the inauguration of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship via video conference, the Prime Minister noted that India has successfully hosted over 20 international sports events in the last decade. These include tournaments such as the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup and prominent global chess competitions.
“The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be held in India. We are preparing with full strength to host the 2036 Olympic Games,” Modi said, underlining the government’s long-term vision for sports development.
The National Volleyball Championship, being held in Varanasi from January 4 to January 11, has drawn participation from more than 1,000 players representing 58 teams from across the country. Officials said the tournament is expected to reflect a high level of competition, sportsmanship and emerging talent in Indian volleyball.
Hosting the national-level tournament in Varanasi reflects the increasing focus on improving sports infrastructure and encouraging athletic growth in the city, according to an official statement. It added that such events are strengthening Varanasi’s position as a venue for major national sporting and cultural programmes.
