New Delhi: India and Bangladesh on Thursday completed the release and repatriation of fishermen from both sides who had inadvertently crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line, reinforcing a humanitarian approach to handling such incidents at sea.

The Ministry of External Affairs said 23 Indian fishermen and 128 Bangladeshi fishermen were released and returned to their respective countries along with their operable fishing vessels. The fishermen had been detained in recent weeks after unintentionally entering territorial waters controlled by the other side.

Officials noted that the exchanges followed earlier releases carried out in January and December 2025, when India facilitated the return of 142 Indian fishermen, while Indian authorities reciprocated by releasing 128 Bangladeshi fishermen.

The coordinated effort was finalised with a focus on humanitarian considerations and the livelihood concerns of coastal fishing communities that often operate near the maritime boundary, officials said.

During the period of detention in Bangladesh, the Indian High Commission monitored the welfare of Indian fishermen, ensured access to essential supplies, and provided warm clothing where needed. The government reiterated that it places the highest priority on the safety, security, and well-being of Indian fishermen operating in shared waters.
