India and United States Begin High Level Trade Talks to Rework Interim Pact Ahead of Key Deadline

New Delhi: India and the United States commenced high-level ministerial discussions in New Delhi on Tuesday to recalibrate the first phase of their proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The urgent negotiations seek to salvage and restructure a framework agreement reached earlier this year, which was disrupted by sudden shifts in American tariff policies.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal hosted United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at Vanijya Bhawan for the high-stakes dialogue. The meeting, also attended by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, India’s chief negotiator Darpan Jain, and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, follows a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump during their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. Both nations are working aggressively to finalise an interim pact before July 24, the expiration date for Washington’s temporary 10 percent tariff framework on global trading partners.

The ongoing talks focus heavily on revising the baseline contours established in February, which were upended after the US Supreme Court struck down sweeping tariffs previously announced by the Trump administration. New Delhi is firmly prioritizing preferential tariff treatments to secure a definitive competitive advantage for Indian exporters, particularly to insulate its domestic industries against separate ongoing Section 301 trade investigations. Indian negotiators are simultaneously driving hard bargains to expand market access for the country’s manufacturing and robust services sectors.

Conversely, the American delegation led by Trade Representative Greer is pushing for long-term structural commitments from New Delhi. Washington’s key priorities include securing deeper concessions and expanded market entry for American agricultural commodities, energy exports, defence machinery, and commercial aircraft. US Ambassador Sergio Gor expressed strong optimism regarding the trajectory of the talks, noting on social media that both democracies are moving decisively toward unlocking new economic opportunities and significantly deepening their strategic economic partnership
