Lisbon (Portugal)— India and Portugal have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, renewable energy, and education as the two nations celebrate 50 years since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations.

The decision came during the 5th India-Portugal Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Lisbon, co-chaired by Sibi George, Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Helena Malcata, Director General for Foreign Policy at Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both sides conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral ties, covering political, economic, and cultural dimensions. They agreed to accelerate discussions on pending agreements to ensure their early conclusion.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two delegations also exchanged perspectives on India-EU relations and various regional and global developments of mutual concern. They reaffirmed their intent to maintain close coordination at international forums, including the United Nations.

During his visit, Secretary George met with Ana Isabel Xavier, Portugal’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, to discuss ways to broaden strategic engagement between the two nations. Both countries expressed satisfaction with the recent high-level exchanges, including visits to Portugal by the President of India, the Lok Sabha Speaker, and the Finance Minister.

It was mutually agreed that the next round of consultations will take place in New Delhi at a convenient date.
