New Delhi: The Indian Air Force has successfully deployed its contingent to Australia to participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, a premier multinational air combat drill hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force. The high-profile exercise is scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 7 along the northern coast of Australia, bringing together military forces from 20 nations, including Quad partners India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The Indian contingent comprises four Rafale fighter jets, two C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, and a dedicated team of over 120 personnel.

Operating from key Australian airbases including Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley, the international drill will feature up to 100 aircraft and more than 2,500 military personnel engaging in complex, large-force employment wargames. The Indian High Commission in Australia welcomed the arrival of the Indian air warriors in Darwin, noting that the engagement will focus on sharpening combat flying skills, enhancing interoperability, and building lasting institutional bonds over the next three weeks. The exercise represents a landmark deployment for the Indian Air Force as its frontline Rafale jets make their official debut at Pitch Black, stepping up from the Su-30MKI fighters fielded in previous editions to train alongside and against advanced fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft.

The Australian Defence Ministry emphasized that the exercise serves as a crucial platform to strengthen regional and global operational integration in one of the largest military training airspaces in the world. Air Commodore Matthew McCormack, the Exercise Commander, highlighted that Pitch Black 2026 provides realistic, high-end combat scenarios designed to allow international allies to plan, fight, and learn collectively. This iteration will build upon operational insights from the 2024 drills and features an expansive participant list including France, Germany, Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, and the Philippines, alongside embedded personnel from nations like Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sweden, and Finland.
